Understanding Septic Tanks

A septic tank is a buried underground tank designed to separate solid and liquid waste. It achieves this separation through a layer of gravel, allowing water to drain while retaining waste until it can be safely disposed of.

Typically, a septic tank should be 4 to 5 feet deep and 3 to 4 feet wide. It should be buried between 6 to 8 feet below the ground in well-drained soil.

Signs You Need Septic Tank Services

Septic tank pumping is generally recommended every 3 to 5 years on average. However, certain factors may necessitate more frequent servicing. Signs indicating a need for septic tank services include:

  1. Water from the Drain Field: Water emerging from your drain field could indicate an overly full septic tank, hindering proper drainage and potentially causing waste to surface through the drain field.

  2. Unusual Odors: An unusual odor emanating from your septic system may suggest an overly full tank where waste has started decomposing. This can lead to the release of gases that rise through the drain field and into your home.

  3. Shifting or Sinking Water Lines: Shifting or sinking water lines may indicate a clogged drain field, preventing proper drainage and causing water to pool on your property. This can result in sewage backups and foul odors.

Benjamin and his team were great. I had a clogged drain on a Saturday. They kept me updated on their arrival time and when they arrived they quickly took care of my issue. They were very professional and courteous during the whole process and even provided a free camera inspection. I’ll use them again for plumbing services and I highly recommend.

Ben at Drain Doctors was a life saver for us. We had a mysterious leak in our upstairs bathroom and had two other plumbers come have a look before Ben came and figured it out in a few minutes, then helped us understand that the damage caused by the leak should be covered by our insurance policy. Great service and great interaction. Thank you Ben!

Downstairs toilet was plugged up. Pablo came in and routed the backup then decided run a camera check. Camera check discovered roots and 2 breaks/offsets between the house and the street. Pablo then made a more thorough inspection and survey of the lines to provide me with a quote to replace/repair the entire line. Quote was very reasonable for the scope of work that needed to be performed. They even tied my secondary line from my guest room extension into the new main line as part of the work and installed a new main clean out in the front yard (previous one was in an interior closet). The work was completed in 4 days and Drain Doctors only had to dig in a 5x5 area of my yard to replace the whole line and complete the additional work. When the work was complete they cleaned up the whole area and replaced the sod. The front yard area barely shows that a major line replacement/repair took place. Highly recommend for price, efficiency and quality of work.

Drain Dr was the first contractor I've dealt with in a really long time that left me feeling 100% confident in their work and the integrity of their business. Noticed a leak coming through the stucco of our entryway ceiling. Called Drain Dr and they came out same day. From the start, they were very educational and consultative about our options. Never did we feel pressured to move forward. Always felt like they had our best interest in mind. Turned out to be a leak from the bathtub drain which resulted in some structural rotting. Drain Dr came back the next day and fixed everything. On top of resolving the issue at hand, they conducted a free diagnostic checkup of our entire house. They caught a massively corroded angle stop in a guest bathroom and was able to replace same day, potentially saving us from a major disaster. Bottom line: These guys are pros and I won't be using anyone else in the future. Do yourself a favor and give them a call. Highly recommend.
